The Local Heroes were contacted by Sheriff Hemlock to help investigate the start of what he feared will be a string of murders.
He doesn't want the citizens to relive an new Unpleasantness or panic as they recall the Chopper murders
A few days earlier 3 con men were found murdered and now a man at the town's sawmill was discovered with the same mutilation.
Finn, Fletcher, Sagerius and Barthel search the mill for clues, where not only Harker was killed, but also his secret lover Katrine (daughter of Ven Vinder)
That same day they head out to Habe's Sanatorium to question the bodyguard Grayst who survived the attack on his charges; Mortwell, Hask and Tabe.
At the asylum they are attacked by Grayst who has adopted a ghoul-like appearance. There they also speak, briefly, to Tsuto and discover a Necromancer living in Habe's basement experimenting on the dead.
The next day the Local Heroes are asked to come into office, where Maester Grump arrived after witnessing a raid on his neighboring farm south of Sandpoint.
According to him the scarecrows are alive and eat humans, dogs, and livestock.
When the four arrive they fight ghouls disguised as scarecrows who did indeed attack the Hambley farm.
On their way back they pass the sanatorium which was also attacked and all patients were freed.
In town they inform Hemlock and ask to have a small patrol of guards and a Cleric go out and guard the roads.
Having uncovered the (possible) source of the ghoul infestation, Sagerius, Finn, Barthel and Fletcher ride to the Misgivings;
the haunted mansion built by Aldern's grandfather Vorel.
Not only the manor will try to rid itself of all that breathes, using Hauntings that terrorize, madden, sicken, frighten and plague.
But the unliving denizens will kill all that enter..
