Rekk knew he was different, and his father always told him not to hide it.
Be proud and stand tall, he always said.
And so he did, he walked tall, sat up straight and even slept sitting.
Never the bright one, Rekk became used to commands, as instructions never lingered.
Till one day he was told to; go climb a mountain !.. and he did.
During the climb and during his short stay at the top, Rekk reflected on his life.
For the first time he thought about his future and his role in it.
He remembered his short life in town, the weird faces people make when they thought he wouldn't notice. The short and loud orders people always give him. He wouldn't take it anymore, his life would change.
When he arrived back home, his father asked him where he went and why.
Explaining his epiphany (not his own word) Harold saw the light in his eyes.
Harold gave him some advice he took to heart; if you want to see the world and other cultures.. join the army.
Since the Dalelands have no such thing, he went to Cormyr to join the Purple Dragons.
They easily accepted him (a strong man, used to being told what to do)
and when assignments came in, Rekk volunteered for the mountain division..
Now his second 5-year tour has ended. His epiphany from long ago has melted away.
He learned that he liked being told what to do, it takes away distractions.
And when he wants to reflect or be alone, he 'climbs a mountain'.
